ANTIQUE 300 yr old JAPANESE EDO ERA c. 1700 KAKESUZURI DOCUMENT SAFE TANSU CHEST

This is a 300 year old Edo era. Antique Japanese portable safe chest known as a kakesuzuri tansu dating to the early 1700s. (portable document and valuables tansu) has. The larger lower drawer has a fourth drawer inset wtihin its two part upper construction (see pictures 2, 10 & 11). All of the black lacquer sides are embellished with gold paintings of shochikubai - the Japanese three elements of happiness: pine, bamboo and plum blossoms.

The top handle (see pictures 8 & 12) is still strong enough to carry the weight of this chest even fully loaded. Kakesuzuri were used to hold documents and valuables (the forerunner of the attache case).

This chest still has its original black kijiro (natural lacquer). The front lock does not have a key but can still be used to latch shut the front door. T he method of construction as well as all the forged iron work as well as the type of art work o. N this chest dates it to the mid Edo Era c.

The hinges, and latches are made of thick forged iron with a protective coat of burnt lacquer. The top handle as well as interior drawer pulls are of a thick forged copper. The front door closes securely when the closed and secured by the latching lock. T he top handle is still very secure (see picture 3) and provides a convenient way to transport this chest.

All drawers open and close smoothly. The double hinged door swing. S open and closes easily.

As seen in my pictures, there is some noticeable wear to the black lacquer as well the gold artwork and along with a three century old warm patina t. Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to see the aged character of this 300 yr old tansu. Chest measures 8 1/4" wide by 9 1/2'' tall by 13" deep (21 x 24 x 33 cm). A very warm accent for your home or office.
