This antique Japanese Masakari or. Ax was made of hand forged tempered iron over 120 years ago by a master Japanese blade maker, Nakajiro (see signature photo 6) using the skills of the samurai sword maker by hand forging soft steel on the outsides and high carbon steel in the middle. The Masakari blade is designed to allow the user to shelter one's hand behind an opening in the back of the blade while making chops or shaping cuts (see picture 1). The blade is beveled on both sides and t he backside has a flat area for pounding.Perhaps the most versatile of all axes. It has been well used yet well loved and is from a period of quality craftsmanship which is seldom seen today. Weighing in at over 1 lb 8 oz and overall 13 3/4" long (35 cm) by 4 5/8" wide (11.7 cm) with a blade length of 4 (10 cm) It is still very sharp and, with the exception of an aged patina, it remains in very fine condition. A n excellent tool for chopping, splitting and carving. Old world craftsmanship for the new world craftsman! A great collectible ax , still sharp and extremely functional. Built samurai tough of samurai steel to last generations!
