The corners are held together with tight Japanese carpenters. Joints and wood (keyaki) pegs. The top edge of the hibachi, the two hand carved side handles and the trim around the front drawers is Indonesian ebony (Macassar).

When this was used a layer of charcoal ashes would be placed on the bottom and a small charcoal fire would br burning inside on top of the ashes. A small tripod with an iron teapot was often inside also to boil water for tea. The four drawers in the front are made with kiri wood on their inside (paulownia) as is the secret stash on top with its solid Indonesian ebony lid.

Pick this up and under are two kiri wood stash boxes one with a kiri wood lid. The hole in the center is for a finger lift. These are often used as a an end table or a small coffee table. This already has a 1/4 inch piece of tempered glass cut to fit the inside hibachi top.
