Antique Yatate Japanese Portable Writing Set Traveling Case. Japanese portable brush/pen holder with attached inkwell. Piece probably would have been tucked in to hang around a belt. Total weight 2.5 oz. This unusual design connects the brush tube and the inkpot with a 1¼ metal link band.Brush Tube ½ x 3/8 oval tube x 5½ long. Copper with a delicate hinged cap with a thumbnail notch for opening.
At the opposite end is open and filled with cork (maybe used as a nib wipe). Very good condition with a patina of use. Inkpot Brass pot looking like a tiny teapot (no spout).
1 1/8 in diameter x 1 1/8 tall with a half inch diameter opening and hinged lid. On one side of the pot is a small engraved decoration of a windowed diamond shape. Pot hangs from a wire handle connected to loops on the sides of the pot these loops also hold an extra ring maybe used to hang a ribbon? The inside of the pot is filled with expected black fibers to absorb the ink so it would not drip out and provide controlled of ink for the writing tool.
Pot is in very good condition with a patina of use. This Yatate style is associated with the end of the Japanese Edo period.
