This is a late Meiji Era c. 1910 Japanese 3 drawer rectangular hibachi. Brazier used as a tabakobon (A small hibachi used as a pipe lighter as well as a hand warmer as well or a small tea pot or sake warmer). This hibachi has custom fitted glass top and stand making it an ideal height for many uses.
This works great a shadow box to display your favorite small collectibles. There is a section used as a waste ash dump as well as a lidded storage area for tobacco or charcoal (see picture 5). The three drawers could have been used for storage of pipes or metal chopsticks for moving charcoal.The original copper hibachi fitting is gone and now has a tatami lining. Here are wooden insert handles on both. To aid in transporting it from place to place while coals burn in the ash filled firebox. This 110 year wooden tobakobon brazier tansu measures 24 1/2" long by 18 1/2 deep by 15 1/2" high (62.2 x 47 x 39.5 cm). It is made of a thick. It also has removable zelkova wood trim around the top (see picture 8). Great skill is shown in its craftsmanship with all dovetailed construction (see picture 11). There are a few minor stains and burn marks on the removable top trim and along with a warm glowing patina, it remains in.
