Dating to the early 1900's, this is a very special antique Japanese two drawer student's desk. (zelkova) wood with sugi (cryptomeria) wood interiors. This type of bench like tansu was known as a tsukue (desk) and held writing materials and it was a perfect size to act as a desk sitting on the tatami floor. (zelkova) was the wood of choice for a chest like this one as it was one of the strongest and most beautiful of Japan's indigenous woods. This desk still has its original deep century + year old patina.
The copper handles have a nice dark patina as well. T he method of construction (wooden pin - see last picture) as well as all the early industrial copper handles o. N this chest dates it to the early 1900's. With exception of minor signs of past use (some ink stains on the interior of the drawers see pictures 3 & 4) and a nice warm aged century old patina, t. All drawers open and close with ease.
Ansu desk/chest measures 31 1/2" wide by 13 1/2" deep by 13 1/2 high (80 x 35 x 35 cm). A very warm accent for your home or office. Great to use as a stand on a desk or chest.
