The making of a Funa-dansu takes two to three months, and is a joint effort of the sashi-mono craftsmen who assemble the chests, the lock smiths who make the metal fittings and locks, and the lacquer craftsmen. The outside is made of zelkova wood with multiple layers of lacquer and heavy iron fittings to prevent damage, while the inside is made of paulownia wood to prevent water infiltration, floats on water, and has a hidden box built in to prevent theft with elaborate work that doubles as a lock. Two large drawers on the top inside the closed door. Two small drawers in the middle. Two medium size drawers at the bottom.
