Gold Lacquer Seal Case (Makie Inro) Southern Barbarian (Westerners prior to Edo period, mostly from Spain or Portuguese). A gold lacquer seal case that features Southern Barbarian. A very expressive gem that delivers the atmosphere of what then the Japanese people thought of Southern Barbarians.

It comes with Netsuke: "Manji" Japanese traditional Swastika. A seal case was commonly used during the Samurai Period to carry small items such as medicine. Those days, they also carried signature impressions, thus the name "seal case" comes from.

Typically, it is in a rectangular shape, and either made of wood or metal, and has 3 to 5 compartments or levels for easier organization. Each compartment or level has a string on both sides (Ojime) and was used across the string in a band (Obi) for security. Gold Lacquer is a lacquer technique. You draw pictures or letters on the lacquer's surface and sprinkle metal powder such as gold or silver before it completely dries.
