Very rare early type of kyu gunto with shakudo saya safety catch. Even more uncommon is that its signed in German, as gift of captain of Imperial Japans forces Yamamoto. Unfortunately, Yamamoto is a common name, but there was a military attache with a rank of infantry captain who was stationed in 1860s first in St. Petersburg, Russia and then in Vienna.

The dates and circumstances are a good match for this sword.
